When Will I Stop Writing?

I get asked this question a lot. I’d like to think that it’s not that people want me to stop; it’s just that they wonder when or if I ever will cease to write.
For nearly 60 years I have been a professional writer, I received my first check when I was not quite 14 years old. It was payment for a poem that I published. Since then, I have written everything from songs to novels to poetry to advertising and everything in between. It’s what I do and it’s who I am.
“But when?” many persist. I have only two broad guidelines that would keep me from writing:
- When I have nothing left to say. (That’s extremely doubtful.)
- When I’m dead. (It’s hard to write from beyond the grave.)
I have even tried to address the latter circumstance. I write my posts here up to four years in advance and I wrote this blog post on June 26, 2018 – JUST IN CASE!

It’s amazing, isn’t it? My blog posts aren’t that far ahead, but I’ve got some scheduled for next year. I’m surprised to be athwart books 3 and 4, with a couple more after that! Amazed and humbled at it all, aging gratefully. (No one has asked me when I’ll stop writing. Yet. hmmm)
