Karen, Mary Ann And Rachel

May 14, 2021

I guess I’m a bit unusual. I have been happily married to my wife Rachel  for nearly 40 years yet I am still in contact with my high school girlfriend and my fiancé from the 1970’s. I keep in contact with the latter two regularly. We still love to talk and catch-up on each other’s lives. They are a part of who I am.

Karen was the darling of my youth. She was beautiful, strong, athletic and nearly always on my side. We met in 1964 and we have been friends ever since; ever since two of her divorces, one of mine and some 57 years. That’s a lot of time! We can still find the humor in it all and we still hold each other in great esteem. Time has bound us together forever.

I met Mary Ann in 1973 and for awhile we were destined to be married. We never did marry, in part because of my worry about supporting a child of my own and three of hers. Instead of hating each other for the sorry outcome of our relationship, we have remained good friends for 48 years. That’s also a long time! She is also a part of my life that will never fade into the sunset.

A few years ago I was on the phone with Karen. I have always loved her sense of humor. We were talking about getting older and the prospect of death. Out of nowhere she said, “When you die have Rachel give me a call, “We’ll have a party and spend some of your money!” Yikes! While the thought was repulsive at first, I found it somewhat reassuring. Now I rather enjoy the notion.

Likewise Mary Ann has often made similar comments and has asserted to my wife that I have been talking about dying for over 40 years. She and my wife Rachel love to gang-up on me when we’re all on the phone together. It’s like I am a poor mouse being batted about by two cats. In friendship, Karen, Mary Ann and Rachel like to mock me more than a bit for my morbidity.

I am writing this post three years in advance and who knows if I’ll still be around when this is posted. (I hope so.) If I am gone and have arrived at that great keyboard in the sky, I sincerely hope that all three of these marvelous women are having a glass of wine and a good laugh together.  Yuk it up gals! I’ll be picking up the check.
