Lord I Hope This Day Is Good

Another favorite song of mine is Don Williams’ Lord I Hope This Day Is Good. What I like best about it are the simple, straightforward lyrics and what they say. It goes back to what I say in my songwriting classes, namely that you don’t have to get fancy or complicated to write great lyrics.

The song starts with a pensive verse:

“Lord I hope this day is good.

I’m feeling tired and misunderstood.

I should be thankful Lord, I know I should

But Lord I hope this day is good.”

The straightforward lyrics are accompanied by music of the same nature. Musically, it’s really simple stuff but it all works together exceedingly well.

One of my favorite lines from the song is:

“You’ve been the king since the dawn of time.

All I’m asking is a little less crime…”

Yep, real simple stuff but it sure works! Don Williams was a genius at this type of song. Others include: Listen To The Radio, If Hollywood Don’t Need You, and Good Ole Boys Like Me among others. We lost Don about four years ago. We in the songwriting community miss him very much.
