The Christmas Letter

December 19, 2014

Years ago, my wife and I started receiving Christmas Letters during the holiday seasons. These usually chronicled the past year of our various friends from around the world. Most were multiple pages in length and almost always detailed what grandson little Jimmy was doing in school, etc. At the time these letters seemed to be a bit on the “old lady-ish” side. Then one season came where we noticed that we actually enjoyed these offerings. Things changed, so I began to write our own Christmas Letter every year. I did so with the firm rule in mind that it should never exceed one page. To my surprise, I found that our friends and family actually enjoyed the recap of our year. It took me a long time to learn the Christmas Letter but I feel better off for the experience.

Being that this will be my last blog post before Christmas, I thought I would share a bit of the contents of this year’s  letter with all of you and wish you a very happy and content holiday season, however and wherever you celebrate it.

We always begin, “Merry Christmas (Buon Natale / Bon Nadel / Frohe Weihnachten / Joyeux Noël / Feliz Navidad) Christmas is coming soon and we want to catch you up on our 2014 as well as invite all of you to share your news with us.”

We then detailed the major points of our year, our various travels and what made 2014 so special in our lives. I had to tell everyone about my back surgery in the hope that a little Christmas sympathy would flow my way. Because we travel so much, we made an honest point to acknowledge  all of our friends from around the world and let them know how much we care for them.  Our true blessing is that we have good friends on both continents.

Among our extensive travels, we mentioned our trips to Lake Garda in Northern Italy.  As the photo shows, we still love the lake after dozens of trip to its shores and the two of us are still having fun together. It is truly a very special place.

We also detailed our trip to Guanajuato, Mexico to visit our family there. We had a great time in the high altitudes of Mexico and saw yet another part of our world that was new to us.

Of course, a mention was also merited on the subject of Allen publishing the rest of his books; there are now seven available to the public on Amazon at: We also detailed Rachel’s year, busy honing her crafting and beading skills with some beautiful results. Thankfully, her new role as an e-book editor has also paid off well. Lastly, we talked about  entertaining our friends on both continents with dishes from all over the world. Dinner with us is not an ordinary event.

In closing, we always tell our  family and friends, “please remember that we really do think of you often. You are the ‘stuff’ that makes life great! We often share stories about you among our new friends in both Italy and North Carolina. Veramente, abbiamo  la vita bella!”

We wish all of you readers a very Merry Christmas and a new year full of health and happiness. Follow your dreams and please stay in touch!
